Then Karate was actively practiced on the island of Okinawa, then an independent nation. Because of its'geographical position.Jt was culturally influenced by both China and Japan.

Okinawan masters covertly visited the Chineses main land to increase their martial art knowledge. Eventually three broad types of Okinawan martial art sprang up, named after the nearest city. Thus Shuri TE (land of Shuri) later gave rise to Shorin Ryu, Nahate Kung fu later followed closely on the classical Southern Shaolin Kung fu known as Shorin Ryu.

Both Shorin Ryu and Shorei Ryu were infuenced by Tomarite Okinawan masters organized a council, the Okinawan Shobukai. They chose the name Karate (China Land) as an Umbrella name for their various fightling arts. The Sobukai selected the Okinawan School, teacher Funakoshi Gichin to represent them publicly and he may be called the father of Modern Karate.

About Me

Kyoshi.S.Sankar, 7th Dan Black Belt, Founder & Technical Director of CCS KARATE ACADEMY

Karate is not solely a fighting technique. It is training in self-discipline, self-confidence, concentration, serenity in threatening situations when fear or anger might be the natural response, stamina, controlled energy, swifter reflexes, proper breathing, a positive attitude to life -- to mention only a small part. In short karate is training in body and spirit. The total concentration and discipline required to study karate carries over to daily life. The dojo -- i.e. the place where karate is studied is traditionally called 'The Place of Enlightenment'. In it we make contact with and take control of ourselves -- our fears, anxieties, reactions, and habits. The dojo is a place of learning and self-enlightenment for both teacher and taught. If the student has the necessary dedication the teacher provides the knowledge and spiritual inspiration, then Karate will reveal itself to have an essence and meaning far removed from just breaking bricks and boards.
